StarFest 2022

StarFest was an unforgettable festival-style celebration of young performers, community and creativity. On 18 June 2022 The Star Project turned Oakfield Garden into a theatre festival. Inside a fully rigged tipi tent, we transformed an empty canvas into a West End theatre — complete with professional staging, lighting and a full LED backdrop provided by SLS Productions, who came up from London to create the magic. Our students performed ensemble medleys, small-group pieces and brave solo spots, while a lively festival village of stalls, activities and local businesses entertained families on the grass outside. It was a day of energy, colour and real theatrical moments — a true festival for the next generation of stars.

StarFest wasn’t a traditional end-of-term show — it was a full festival. Across the day children of all ages performed in a variety of styles and formats: ensemble medleys on the main stage, a dedicated Rising Stars section for our youngest performers, and individual performances on the Solo Stage. While performers rested between sets, families explored food, crafts and activity stalls provided by local partners who joined the celebration. Even when the skies opened with a very British downpour, the team and audiences powered on — soggy feet, wellies and all — keeping the festival spirit alive.

What was performed?

Our performers brought songs and scenes inspired by a huge range of musicals, including:

Annie · Hamilton · Wicked · Matilda · We Will Rock You · Cinderella · Mary Poppins · The Little Mermaid · Bedknobs & Broomsticks · Lilo & Stitch · The Incredibles · Pirates of the Caribbean · Moana · Frozen · Rapunzel · High School Musical · SIX · Blood Brothers · Oliver! · Hairspray · Charlie and the Chocolate Factory · The Greatest Showman

These ranged from showstoppers and ballads to comedy pieces and high-energy dance numbers — a true showcase of versatility and confidence.

StarFest was bursting with energy from start to finish. The tipi at Oakfield Garden became the beating heart of the festival, alive with music, dance and theatre. Audiences were treated to powerful ensemble numbers and unforgettable moments. Our Rising Stars delighted everyone with their own special section, proving that even the youngest children can command the stage.

Beyond the performances, families soaked up the festival atmosphere, exploring stalls, food, crafts and activities from local businesses that kept the day buzzing with life — even in the rain! The professional sound, lighting and staging by SLS Productions gave every number a West End sparkle, while the mix of ages on stage created inspiring moments of teamwork and mentorship. Together, it all combined to make StarFest more than just a show — it was a true celebration of talent, community and creativity.

StarFest reflected The Star Project’s mission: to build confidence, teach professional theatre skills, and show that every role matters. The festival format encouraged creativity, risk-taking and community involvement in a way a traditional show does not always allow — giving children performance experience and memories to last a lifetime.
